Professor Michael (Mike) Garrett (born 1964) is the General Director of the Dutch astronomy research foundation ASTRON,〔http://www.astron.nl/about-astron/-institute/board-governors/astron-board〕 the Netherlands Institute for Radio Astronomy. He was born in Kilwinning, North Ayrshire, Scotland, and brought up in nearby Saltcoats, on the west coast. He went to St. Mary's (1969–1976) and St. Andrew's RC schools (1976–1982). He graduated with first-class honours at the University of Glasgow (1982–1986), and did a PhD at the University of Manchester (1986–1990) . He was supervised at Jodrell Bank, Manchester by Dr. Dennis Walsh.〔Dennis Walsh〕 His immediate academic lineage〔http://phdtree.org/scholar/garrett-michael-a/〕 includes radar pioneers such as Prof. Sir Bernard Lovell and Robert Hanbury Brown. In 2003 he became director of the Joint Institute for VLBI in Europe (JIVE),〔http://www.ira.inaf.it/evnnews/archive/evnnews16.html〕 and in 2007 director of ASTRON. Garrett is Professor of radio astronomy techniques〔http://www.strw.leidenuniv.nl/people/faculty.php?node=11〕 at the University of Leiden. His research interests in astronomy are broad, covering a wide range of astrophysical objects, near and far.
